How to Repair Your Leather Product

We use many leather products in our daily life. We use leather to make products because it is durable. We can see many leather products around us, such as leather seats, leather jackets, leather handbags, leather sofas, leather boots.

The extensive use results in scraps and tears that take away the aesthetic value of the product. To tackle this problem, leather repair kits are manufactured. The leather repair kit contains all the necessary tools that you will need to repair your product.

If you see any bubbles, you can easily draw them down by using this sponge.

How to Repair Your Product?

By following some simple steps and the tools given in a leather repair kit, you will conclude that your product now looks as if it is brand new.

Step 1: Clean Your Leather Product

Clean the damaged area of the leather product so that you can see the damaged area clearly. Never clean the leather product with water because it can exacerbate the damage.

You are given a cleaner with your leather repair kit for this purpose. Moreover, there are many oils and conditioners available in the market to clean the leather products.

Step 2: Trim the Damaged Area

Trim the damaged area of your leather product with the help of fine scissors. You can also use sandpaper for this purpose. It will balance or give it a fine look. After trimming, the torn or rough leather is removed, and only fine leather remains. After this, you can easily repair your leather product.

Step 3: Put the Leather Patch

Put the leather patch on the damaged area. Obviously, you can’t do anything on the damaged area directly unless you don’t have anything on which you can do the process. Cut the patch according to the requirement.

Keep the patch a bit larger than the damaged area on your leather product. Be sure that the patch is not very large as to make an inconvenience for you. 

Step 4: Apply Glue to the Patch

Apply the glue to the leather patch, which you are to put on the damaged part of your leather product. Don’t over-apply the glue to the patch as it will make it bulgy and consequently, might not sit perfectly on the damaged part.

Step 5: Graining 

Your damaged area still needs graining and for that, you need a graining paper. In this step, you fill small holes and gaps in where you have done your previous steps. In some leather repair kits, you have a liquid to fill the gaps and holes. When you are filling gaps with the graining paper, you need to take care of the texture, and it is a bit difficult. You need some practice and patience to execute this step efficiently.

Step 6: Apply the Filler 

After you have filled all the gaps and holes in the damaged area of your product. Next, you have to apply the filler in that area. Filler works like a primer. Filler helps the repaired area to better absorb the leather dye. You can apply filler by using a sponge. If you see any bubbles on the areas where you have applied the filler. You can draw them down by using the sponge.

Step 7: Mix the Dye

The leather repair kit contains different colors. But sometimes the colors in the leather repair kit doesn’t match your leather product. You don’t need to worry about it. You can mix colors to make the color of your product, but this step is tricky, and it can make some trouble for you.

Step 8: Apply the Dye

The final step is to apply the dye on the repaired area that you have prepared. You can apply the dye by using a small paintbrush. While applying, make sure no area remains undyed. You can make one or two coats of the dye. After dye, wait until the dye gets dry. Look at the final results.
