Components of the Sewing Machine

Man uses clothes to wear for a long time to cover his body. He makes clothes by stitching fabric. In early ages, women used to stitch clothes with their hands with the help of needle and thread. It was very time taking process.

They spent a long time in sewing clothes. Same in the clothing industries manual sewing process was common and due to this, the production rate was low.

To overcome this loss and to increase the production rate sewing machine was designed to sew clothes at an industrial level.

The efficiency and productivity of sewing improved with the invention of the sewing machines in the clothing industry.

After the successful working of a sewing machine at industrial level sewing machines was also designed for domestic use and named as home sewing machines.

These home sewing machines were designed for the use of only one person.  Home sewing machines use a single stitch type for stitching purposes.

Components of the Sewing Machine

A sewing machine consists of multiple components. Some of the components of the sewing machine are given below.

Spool Pin

The spool pin only used to hold the spool containing thread.

Bobbin Winder

To wind the thread across the bobbin the bobbin winder is used

Bobbin Winder Stopper

When the winder completes its work. The bobbin winder stopper stops the winder it from more winding.

Width Dial

The purpose of this width dial is to lessen the zig-zag pattern while stitching.

Pattern Selector Dial

The stitching pattern is selected by the pattern selector dial.

Hand Wheel

Handwheel is used to move the needle from top to bottom. In every sewing machine, the handwheel is present on the right side of the sewing machine.

Length Dial

The Stitch length dial controls the length of the stitches.

Power Switch

The power switch turns off or on the sewing machine. The power switch is located at the right side of the machine.

Thread Tension Dial

Thread tension dial is used to control the tension on the thread that is coming from the spool of thread located at the top.

Thread Lever

While sewing the thread from the thread spool passes through this thread lever. This thread lever moves according to the movement of the needle.

Needle Clamp

Needle clamp is a small screw type that holds the needle in its place tightly.

Bobbin Cover

During sewing, bobbin cover is used to cover the bobbin holder.

Bobbin cover release button

The bobbin cover release button is used to make the space so that we can put the bobbin in its place.

Feed Dog

Feed dog is the component that pulls the fabric forward during sewing.

Needle

The needle is one of the important components of the sewing machine. You cannot stitch anything without a needle.

Needle Plate

The needle plate is made up of steel and it is situated under the needle. It helps to move the fabric during sewing.

How to Use a Sewing Machine?

There are multiples types of sewing machines that are available in the market. Nowadays electric sewing machines are in common but in the traditional sewing machines, a liver was present that is used to make the sewing machine working.  By following some simple steps, you can easily use a sewing machine.

Put it on Some Height

Place the sewing machine at some height. You can put it on the table and sit on the chair. Or put anywhere you want but make sure it is at some height than you. Also, make sure the needle end is on the left side of your body.

Install Needle

Lose the thumbscrew and insert the right side of the needle in the needle holder. One side has a small hole where we can put the thread and the other side is flat.

The flat side is inserted in the needle holder After inserting tighten the thumbscrew and check that it will not lose while sewing.

Insert the Bobbin

As the sewing machine uses two thread sources for sewing purposes. One is top thread and the other is the lower thread. Before inserting the bobbin in its place, we need to wind the thread in it.

The winder is present on the top of the sewing machine. To wound the bobbin place it on the winder and turn it on. it will automatically stop when the bobbin is completely wound.

Thread Sewing Machine

Now you have to work with the second source of thread which a sewing machine is using.  This spool is placed on the top of the machine. A place is specially made for thread source.

The thread should be attached to the needle. Pull some thread out of the spool of thread. For your help, some small arrows are printed on the sewing machine. Place the thread according to these arrows and pass it through the hole.

Get Threads Out

Hold the thread that you have passed through the needle in your left hand. And move the handwheel towards yourself and complete one revolution. The needle goes up and down one or more times.

Now pull the top thread that you are holding with your left hand. You will see that the bobbin thread is caught by the needle thread.

Now you have a pair of threads one is coming from the needle and the other is from the bobbin.

Plug into Power Supply

In case you have an electric sewing machine you have a pedal and a power cable that plugin to your sewing machine.

After the plugging place, the switch in the power board and turn it on. in some machines a small button is also present to control the power. Check the button if in any case by only plugging your sewing machine don’t start.

Why we Use Sewing Machine?

Sewing process can be done by hand but when you do the same stitching with the sewing machine it will be quite different from the handwork. Similarly, there are many other reasons that convince you to use a sewing machine for the sewing process. Some of them are given below

Fast Sewing

Using Sewing machines is a better and faster way of sewing clothes. You can sew your clothes many times faster and better than sewing them with your hands. You don’t need to spend a lot of your precious time in sewing clothes.

sewing machines help you to complete your work in a short time so that you can do the rest of your work. In sewing machines, you don’t need to search needle and thread at that time because these things are already fetched to it.

If you are running a business of sewing clothes sewing machines will be very helpful to you in this regard. Sewing machines help you to complete your task as soon as possible so that you can take the next project. Your income will increase many times by sewing clothes by sewing machines instead of hands.

Neat and accurate

Sewing machines help you in sewing your clothes neat and clean. you must adjust the thread in the beginning. Once you adjusted it you can start your work and when you end your work you will see that all the stitches are of the same level.

And if you do the same work by hand you will see that the stitches are not at the same. Some of them are too long and some are too short.

There is no perfection in sewing clothes without sewing machines. The product looks beautiful when it sewed by sewing machines.

Fancy Stitches

Sewing machines allow you to do some fancy stitching easily. On the other hand, it is very difficult to complete such tasks by hand. Before the invention of the sewing machine all the embroidery and other designing work done by hand.

The tailors take a lot of time and money for some fancy stitching. But now all this work can be done in a short time and you don’t need to spend a lot of money on this.

Adjusting Garments

Sewing machines help you to adjust your garments on your own. By using home sewing machines, the sewing process becomes very easy for domestic people.

You can stitch your different costumes, party wears on your own. You just need to be a bit professional in sewing your garments but for regular or simple stitching you don’t need to be a professional.

Can Sew Heavy Fabric

Heavy fabric cannot be sewn by hands. If you start sewing them by hand it will take a long time and difficulty for you. The sewing machines can do these tasks easily, efficiently and minimum time.

The heaviest fabric is sewed at the industrial level. Cloth industries are using sewing machines to sew quilts, blankets, trousers and different other products that are made up of heavy fabric easily. You cannot sew these products by your own hands.

Durable Sewing

The stitching that is done by a sewing machine is more durable than the stitches made by hand.

Some machines use double threads for sewing that will make the stitches durable. Double threads are mostly used in sewing heavy fabric products.
